Starhawk is one of the most respected voices in modern earth-based spirituality. She is also well-known as a global justice activist and organizer, whose work and writings have inspired many to action. She is the author or coauthor of eleven books, including The Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Great Goddess, long considered the essential text for the Neo-Pagan movement, and the now-classic ecotopian novel The Fifth Sacred Thing. Many of Starhawk's best political essays--credited with helping the global justice movement find and define itself--were collected into her book Webs of Power: Notes from the Global Uprising |
Starhawk is a veteran of progressive movements, from anti-war to anti-nukes, and is deeply committed to bringing the techniques and creative power of spirituality to political activism. Together with Penny Livingstone-Stark, she is co-originator of Earth Activist Training and
has taught on all the Earth Activist Training (EAT) courses in Britain to date.
She lives part-time San Francisco, in a collective house with her partner and friends, and part-time in a little hut in the woods in western Sonoma County, California, where she practices permaculture in her extensive gardens, and writes.

Landmatters Permaculture Community Devon

EAT takes place at Landmatters, a Permaculture co-operative in rural Devon.
Landmatters is a low-impact community currently made up of 12 adults, 5 children, seven goats, six sheep and a dog. Between them they are managing 42 acres of mixed pasture and woodlands using Permaculture design, ethics and principles. Common to the original members was a history of activism, a knowledge of Permaculture and a desire to connect more deeply to nature. During the last seven years they have bought the land collectively, planted hundreds of trees, created gardens, built low impact structures, established solar and wind power systems, rainwater collection, grey water systems, managed woodland, laid hedges and run educational course and much more. In 2007 they won a public enquiry with a ground breaking decision which granted them the permission to live on their Land and manage it as a Permaculture holding.
Landmatters is part of the LAND project a network of Permaculture demonstration sites
During the course
Landmatters is a low impact project and conditions are basic but beautiful. Participants and collective members alike generally camp for the duration of the course. The teaching and eating spaces will be large yurts or marquees. The cooks will be using a field kitchen, and in good weather we will be cooking on an open fire. All drinking water comes from a hand pump. Washing water will be sourced from collected rain water. You will be able to wash using a bucket wash or have a splash in the beautiful stream at the bottom of the site.
Access to electricity and the internet is limited.
You are asked to leave your vehicles and pets at home as Landmatters cannot accommodate them.
Transport arrangements will be made with successful applicants, you should expect to have to arrive by public transport or lift share.
During the course you will be able to share in some of the routine tasks such as water and firewood collection and vegetable picking and preparation.
